John Waibochi of Virtual City gave a stimulating talk on overcoming barriers to getting modern technologies and infrastructure into rural areas. Virtual City is a private indigenous Kenyan company specialising in the development of knowledge management solutions for local business and community groups using web-based technologies.
John described Digital Villages (a Government of Kenya and World Bank-funded initiative) established in July 2007. Each Digital Village offers a range of communication and business functions that are not generally available or accessible in poor rural communities. And each Digital Village is different based on the specific needs of the local community. This personalisation is what makes them self-sustaining because people know they are going to benefit and the initiative is already having positive economic and social impacts within participating communities.
